John Wick 2 Cast Learn "Gun-Fu" In New Video

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 12:19 AM PST

The acclaimed thriller John Wick delivered some of the most exciting action scenes for some time, and the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 2 looks no different. A new video reveals the training that the cast took to deliver what is termed "gun-fu". Check it out below:

A couple of new clips from the movie have also been released over the past week. One showed Wick returning to a familiar location, while in another he gets fitted for some new threads. A batch of images were also released, and check out the most recent trailer.

John Wick: Chapter 2 stars Keanu Reves as the struggling-to-stay-retired assassin, and the cast also includes Common, Laurence Fishburne, Bridget Moynahan, John Leguizamo, and Ian McShane.

Director Chad Stahelski recently revealed that he was already planning a third John Wick movie. "The studio has asked us to put our heads together and see if we can come up with something," he said. "Winston [the character played by McShane] is a big part of the next one, so is Lance Reddick. We've got some ideas."

In related news, David Leitch, who co-directed the first John Wick and produces the sequel, has been hired to helm Deadpool 2, after original director Tim Miller quit the movie.

John Wick: Chapter 2 arrives in theaters on February 10, 2017.

Mad Catz At Risk Of Being Delisted From The New York Stock Exchange

Posted: 26 Jan 2017 10:01 PM PST

Peripherals maker Mad Catz has been in trouble for more than a little while, and it seems those troubles are far from over with the announcement it may soon be dropped from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

No Caption Provided

"Due to the company's current low selling share price," Mad Catz stated today in a letter to investors, reports Polygon, "the company's continued listing on the [NYSE] is contingent upon the company effecting a share consolidation or otherwise demonstrating a sustained improvement in its share price within the next six months."

The root of the company's problems seems to be the loss of a USD$11 million bet on its decision to co-publish Rock Band 4 alongside Harmonix. After signing, Mad Catz failed to meet the earnings terms of one of its creditors, resulting in the company shedding several executives, and laying off 37 percent of its workforce. Harmonix took its business to PDP, leaving Mad Catz out in the cold.

Mad Catz' statement concluded with the intention to perform a "reverse stock split," to reduce the total number of available shares. Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. is currently trading at 0.15 per share.

FIFA Ultimate Team Championship Series Is Starting Soon

Posted: 26 Jan 2017 07:52 PM PST

The inaugural FIFA Ultimate Team Championship will be getting underway from Feb. 4, 2017, bringing teams from around the world together to compete for a grand prize pool of USD$1.3 million.

Teams gained entry to the championship by competing in weekend qualifying tournaments via the in-game FUT Champions mode in FIFA 17, and then in Regional Premier Qualifier tournaments held around the world--that is as long as they were playing on Xbox One or PlayStation 4. No other platforms were allowed to be used to qualify.

Since the launch of FIFA 17, more than six million players have competed in FUT Champions and more than 2,000 players have competed in the qualifying tournaments," said Brent Koning, FIFA competitive gaming commissioner in the press release. "Now the top players from around the world are ready to show that they are the best in the game."

The first of the Season One regional finals is kicking-off in Paris on February 4, with Sydney and Miami following on the 11th and 19th, respectively. The Season Two regional finals start on April 8 in Vancouver, then to Singapore on April 22 and Madrid on May 6.

The Ultimate Team Championship Finals will take place in Berlin on May 20, with the top 16 teams competing for a share of a USD$400,000 prize pool. The whole thing culminates in the FIFA Interactive World Cup Grand Final announced for London during August.

FIFA has been in the news recently, with the announcement that a new title would be coming to the Nintendo Switch. The game has also found its way onto the top 10 UK sales charts, being narrowly edged-out by Grand Theft Auto 5.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Is No Longer A PS4 Exclusive

Posted: 26 Jan 2017 07:17 PM PST

Previously only announced as releasing on PlayStation 4, it was confirmed today that Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will be also be coming to Xbox One and PC.

The press releases still don't include a release date, so it's not clear at this stage whether there is a timed exclusivity window for the PS4, or if it will be a day-and-date release on all three platforms. We've reached out to Bandai Namco for comment.

One thing the release did make clear, though, was there would still be some exclusive content available for PS4 players, as long as they have a PlayStation VR: "PlayStation 4 system players will be able to play Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown and experience exclusive features developed specifically for the Sony PlayStation VR."

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Ace Combat 7 producer Kazutoki Kono confirmed that the series would be returning to the "Strangereal," stepping away from the real-world setting used in the most recent entries in the series. "Real world is very easy to make credible, easy to believe. But there are so many constraints as a game. On the other hand if it's a hypothetical world, lots of additional setup is needed, but there is a lot of freedom within it," he said.

Kono also isn't all that big on dragons, it seems. "I've seen so many plans for making fantasy shooting experiences using the Ace Combat Engine," he said. "But none of them have ever been convincing enough for us to fully accept. I've seen about 20 or 30 concepts where players can fly a dragon. But it's so boring!"

Resident Evil: The Last Chapter Review

Posted: 26 Jan 2017 04:00 PM PST

At one point in Resident Evil: The Last Chapter, Alice (Milla Jovovich) expresses the feeling that the entirety of her life has involved nothing but running and killing. That's also an apt description for the entirety of this film.

The Last Chapter is the sixth instalment in the Resident Evil film series, which continues its focus on Alice, an ex-security officer for the Umbrella Corporation, who turns against her former employer and is determined to bring it down. The Last Chapter picks up where the previous film, Retribution, ends, and although it provides a substantial recap of the events from the previous films, it does leave out smaller details that become relevant later on. So, if you aren't already familiar with the film or even the games, the appearance of minor characters and creatures may well be confusing.

The first half of the film is characterised by action scenes and jump scares as Alice fights to survive, and after discovering a new goal, to reach a destination in order to try and save what's left of humanity. But though the premise for a lot of the combat and action chases are interesting, watching them play out on screen is incredibly taxing. The Last Chapter favours extreme close-ups of impacts, monster faces, and bodily clashes, and marries them with exceptionally frantic editing. Shots of the action flash for a second at most, as if the scenes were being cut to the beat of a drumroll. Your eyes never have time to completely register a shot before having to process the next one--it's almost as if you're being brainwashed with flashing images of people getting punched, and that hurts.

And with so much distance for Alice to cover, the transition for each encounter is often quick and blunt: literally and figuratively. Although Alice is undoubtedly a resourceful and skilled hero, these transitions also paint her as incredibly unobservant. Scenes will end with Alice getting taken out by something that appears out of thin air, before waking up in another location and in the middle of another sticky situation. Similarly, jump scares aren't as effective as they could be because there's no suspense. They'll shock you with sudden, loud, and unexpected noises before you actually get to see or understand what the threat is. Without any kind of preceding tension, the scares feel random and undeserved.

Alice eventually meets up with a group of survivors made up of new and returning characters, and they're ushered into taking part in a huge, bombastic guerilla clash. Taking some queues from the Mad Max series with makeshift, post-apocalyptic defences, this conflict is fun to watch overall, but in quickly introducing a number of new faces into the mix it makes the smaller skirmishes much harder to follow. It's difficult to figure out who's doing what, who just died, and whether the current person on-screen was referred to by name yet or not.

Things improve markedly in the third act, where The Last Chapter's tone takes a couple of fortunate turns. The group find themselves in an eerie, enclosed labyrinth, which provides some genuinely tense, edge-of your seat moments. Thankfully, the film slows down and takes more time to let you drink in the atmosphere of its settings. Being able to anticipate the what and when of the next big moment is a stark improvement to the beginning of the film. This is also where The Last Chapter starts letting go; relaxing into its own campiness, adding a welcome dash of levity to its thrills. Lines get a little cheesier, knife twirls get a little more flamboyant, and the comic-book villains provide some chuckle-worthy moments.

The one thing that is consistent throughout the film though, is Milla Jovovich's portrayal as Alice. Although the character is one-dimensional, especially if you watch The Last Chapter in isolation, it's hard not to enjoy Jovovich's strong action-hero charisma as she tears through the film's hurdles. You empathize with her when she gets knocked down, and cheer for her when she pulls through. Alice comes off as smart, confident, and cunning, and she carries herself in a way that makes it easy to root for her.

Resident Evil: The Last Chapter has numerous flaws, the most significant of which are its frantically-edited action scenes, but Milla Jovovich remains a likeable hero who is enjoyable to follow. When the film eventually settles down and finds a more suitable skin for itself towards the end, it becomes a little more palatable, a little more fun, and at the very least, will leave you with a few memorable moments.

The GoodThe Bad
Milla Jovovich is a likeable heroAction scenes are too frantically-constructed
Some tense, memorable scenariosJump scares feel cheap and undeserved
First half of the film feels disjointed
Supporting characters are insignificant filler

Destiny Update Coming In Mid-February Addresses Crucible Balance Issues

Posted: 26 Jan 2017 03:45 PM PST

Bungie has provided an overview of what to expect from a forthcoming Destiny update, the focus of which is on Crucible balancing.

Update 2.5.0.2 does not yet have patch notes, but senior designer Josh Hamrick did share some of the goals Bungie has for it. "Sandbox and Crucible designers have been investigating and updating the competitive ecosystem, and I am proud to say that we are getting very close," he said in a blog post. "Through experimentation and near daily battles to the (digital) death, we have begun to home in on a set of changes that we believe freshens things up."

No Caption Provided

A total of five goals are listed, such as providing alternatives and counters for shotguns and making adjustments to Special weapon ammo. The full list follows below.

  • Promote alternatives and counters to shotguns
  • Align potency of Primary weapons with surgical changes
  • File down a couple of issues from each class
  • Fix some issues with a sampler platter of Exotics
  • Supporting adjustments to Special ammunition

Hamrick admitted this list doesn't provide the level of detail players will be hoping for, saying, "I hope that these snippets of information will at least tide you over until we can tell you more." He also teased a livestream where Bungie will share more, adding, "Maybe we can even do that live in the near future."

Update 2.5.0.2 is slated to arrive in mid-February, so it shouldn't be long before we hear more. That release date could always shift, but that's what the current schedule points to. One thing we know for sure we won't be seeing in February is a return of last year's Valentine's Day event.

Overwatch Hits 25 Million Players, Up From 20 Million

Posted: 26 Jan 2017 03:41 PM PST

Overwatch continues to soar.

Blizzard announced today that the popular hero shooter has now reached 25 million registered players. The game has not necessarily sold that many copies, but whatever the case, 25 million is a big number.

In November, Blizzard announced that Overwatch had reached 20 million registered players, hitting that figure faster than any game in Blizzard's history.

Overwatch's latest seasonal event, Year of the Rooster, is currently underway. For a limited time, it adds a CTF-style Brawl mode and special Loot Boxes containing new items on all platforms. You can check out all of its newly added skins here. Additionally, Blizzard has announced that changes are in the works for the character Bastion.

Ryan Reynolds Deserved Oscar Nomination For Deadpool, Jake Gyllenhaal Says

Posted: 26 Jan 2017 03:35 PM PST

Ryan Reynolds should have received a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the movie Deadpool, according to Jake Gyllenhaal.

No Caption Provided

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Gyllenhaal said this week that Reynolds was "brilliant" in the R-rated superhero movie and should have been recognized.

"We talk about brilliant performances all the time, you know, the actors who tear themselves apart for their roles, which I'm a believer in. But then I look at Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool and I say, 'No one can do that but him,'" Gyllenhaal said. "That is truly, purely him. As an artist he struggled for several years to figure that out and it's all there on the screen. And it's brilliant."

Gyllenhaal added: "Sure it's a comic book movie and it's made a lot of money--but that doesn't subtract from Ryan's extraordinary work. Because it's him. I mean, let's ask ourselves: What else do we want from people who create? Something that is truly them."

Deadpool received no Oscar nominations, despite picking up two nods at the Golden Globes. Reynolds responded to the Oscar shutout as Deadpool would--by talking about a tickle-fight.

Reynolds and Gyllenhall star together in the upcoming space movie Life.

You can see all the nominees for the 89th Academy Awards here.

Deadpool 2 is set to be directed by John Wick's David Leitch, who replaces the first film's director, Tim Miller. The movie doesn't have a confirmed release date, but Fox currently has two slots allocated for upcoming X-Men movies, in 2018 and 2019. One is thought to be Deadpool 2, the other possibly New Mutants.

Resident Evil 7: Guides, Secrets, and Features

Posted: 26 Jan 2017 02:49 PM PST

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the latest entry of the long-running survival horror series. Rather than focus on the more blockbuster action stylings of recent entries, the game re-embraces the haunting, atmospheric terror of earlier games. It puts you in control of Ethan Winters, who is looking for his missing wife. His search eventually leads him to a derelict plantation mansion owned by the Baker family, a group of murderous psychopaths that attack and imprison him.

With the game finally out, we've compiled our most important features, guides, and videos detailing everything you need to know about this horrifying new entry.

The Review

"By the end of the campaign, I was ready for the game to be over, but that's okay. RE7 ends just as it starts to outstay its welcome, and after the fact, I felt like I'd survived a truly harrowing journey. The boss fights may be slightly inconsistent and certain sections might drag after a while, but RE7 is still a remarkable success. It has a clear vision and executes it with impressive patience and precision. By returning to horror, Resident Evil has once again become something special." -- Scott Butterworth [Full review]
