| Star Wars Rogue One: All the New Details We Noticed Posted: 15 Jul 2016 04:17 PM PDT New Roguish DetailsThis year's Star Wars Celebration gave us a plethora of new details about the upcoming Star Wars Rogue One. Thanks to a new behind the scenes video showcased at the event, we've been able to uncover a plethora of new information, such as the return of some classic series actors as well as new details about the film's story. Click and to find out everything we noticed. See anything here that we didn't cover? Let us know in the comments below. The New Droid: K-2S0Actor Alan Tudyk can be seen in a mo-cap suit for K-2S0, the droid character he's playing in the film. He can also be seen jumping forward during an action scene on the beach. K-2S0 is the companion and good friend of Captain Cassian Andor. According to Tudyk, K-2S0 "speaks his mind and says things that can be unsettling; [he's] just very honest. If you know any old people, it's like that; he says whatever he thinks." A Mon Calamari AppearsA Mon Calamari--the alien species of Admiral Ackbar--can be seen amongst the production crew and cast. In what's known as "Legend Canon," the Mon Calamari are from the planet Dac, which was invaded by the empire, and nearly destroyed. The alien race was subsequently enslaved by the empire, which may have already happened, or is currently happening in Rogue One. The Mon-Calamari played an integral role in developing space cruisers for the Rebellion. Arresting AndorCaptain Cassian Andor--Diego Luna's character--can be seen taken hostage by a Stormtrooper during the town ambush from the first Rogue One trailer.
Davis ReturnsStar Wars veteran actor Warwick Davis is returning to play a new character in Rogue One. He made his series debut in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi as the Ewok Wicket Wystri Warrick, but has since appeared in a handful of later films, such as The Phantom Menace and The Force Awakens. It's currently unclear what character he'll be playing. Death Star DroidHardcore Star Wars fans are likely to recognize the RA-7 Protocol droid, which can be seen briefly amongst the early shots of the celebration reel. This droid model first appeared in Star Wars: A New Hope in the Death Star; they're typically put in service to Imperial Officers. Young Jyn OrsoA shot that stood out to us in particular was the one above: is this Jyn Erso as a child? If so, it's possible that this could mean that the film could have a flashback. We're thinking it'll depict Jyn's father Galen Erso (played by Mads Mikkelsen) being killed or captured by the Empire, thus inspiring her "rebellious" attitude. Death Star Blueprints? This shot looks to be from the very same AT-AT beach sprint scene from the first Rogue One trailer. However, we now have a better look at what Jyn is carrying; could it be the Death Star blueprints on an oversized storage device? X-Wing vs. AT-ATIt's worth noting the moment a crewmember provides directions to the actors during an action sequence on the beach. He yells what sounds like: "X-Wing, X-Wing! Kills the AT-AT down there. BANG!" This could allude to a scene where an X-Wing swoops in and attacks the AT-AT's during the beach sprint scene. While we're not completely certain this is what the crewmember says, seeing as the latter part of his words were slightly indiscernible, the implication of the scene remains: an X-Wing is going to destroy an AT-AT. Doom and GloomThis brief shot of a Death Squad Stormtrooper doesn't show much in terms of story, however, the composition and lighting reinforces Rogue One's grittier narrative tone. The Stormtrooper unit type can be seen prominently throughout the celebration reel, marching menacingly in small groups to and fro. Only Saw Gerrera OnceAbove is the only shot where we see Forest Whitaker's character, Saw Gerrera. He's portrayed as a mentor figure to Jyn Erso and represents the more extremist side of the Rebel Alliance in the film.
Rebel Landing CraftThere are a handful of shots featuring what appears to be a Rebel landing craft. It seems like this could be the landing craft that Jyn Orso and her allies took to reach the battle on the tropical planet seen in the first trailer. In addition, we see a squad of Death Squad Stormtroopers investigating the crash site of what could be the same landing craft. X-Wing Battles IncomingIt should come as no surprise that Rogue One is going to feature more X-Wing battles; the above picture features an unnamed pilot we'll be seeing the film. Notice the difference in color of his pilot's outfit from the traditional orange we're used to seeing from pilots in the original Star Wars trilogy. InfiltrationThe final shot of the first Rogue One trailer revealed that the film will have a scene where Jyn Erso disguises herself as a Stormtrooper pilot, most likely to infiltrate an Imperial outpost (or the Death Star). The celebration reel confirmed she won't be alone in this mission; Captain Andor will be assisting her disguised as an Imperial officer. Someone on Staff Loves DestinyThe only thing revealed from the face montage at the end of the celebration reel is that Rogue One's costume department has what appears to be a huge Destiny fan. |
| The 38 Best Sidekicks of All Time Posted: 15 Jul 2016 02:49 PM PDT Harley QuinnNot everyone can claim to be literally driven mad with love, but Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, M.D., left her life as a psychiatrist for the man she adored: Batman's arch-nemesis, the Joker. Whether that relationship happens to be on or off, it really doesn't matter: Harley's true love will always be chaos. Brienne may have had to teach him how to wield a sword, but he's taught her a thing or two about tenacity. Besides, he's popular with Littlefinger's whores. (Photo: HBO) The Other Guardians of the GalaxyStar-Lord may be the hero driving the team, but he'd be nothing without the other Guardians. Rocket is a pilot, marksman and tactician; Drax is the muscle; Gamora is an assassin who understands exactly who they're up against; and Groot can expand and regenerate. Who's got next? The slightly younger of the two plumber siblings tends to be the underdog, but he can jump further in the quest for coins, defeating Bowser's forces and rescuing Princess Toadstool. Jesse has just enough humanity to be duped and manipulated by Walt, but he keeps it real, bitch! (Photo: Frank Ockenfels/AMC) Paul Bearer"Ohhh, yessssss!" The signature catchphrase, the power-wielding urn and those ghoulish looks made Paul Bearer (real-life mortician William Moody) the perfect manager for The Undertaker. The two had a tumultuous love-hate relationship, probably stemming from a very sordid past that involved a secret lovechild and arson, natch. Unfortunately, Paul Bearer took to the WWE coffin in 2013. RIP. (Photo: WWE) Bender Bending Rodriguez, Sr.The future(ama) can be a scary place, especially if you've been cryogenically frozen for a thousand years, like Fry. Fortunately, he can rely on his alcohol-swilling robot pal Bender to at least get the party started. If she comes off as too brutal, at least she knows how to keep her emotions in check until after the battle is won. Now that's kick-ass. Let's just say Donkey is indispensable to our favorite ogre's survival and is a mean wedding singer to boot. Ron Weasley and Hermione GrangerUnderachieving but plucky Ron and brainy Hermione are Harry Potter's greatest allies, and they've helped him pass the TriWizard Tournament, save a hippogriff, form Dumbledore's Army, destroy horcruxes and fight numerous magical battles at the risk of their own lives. Fortunately, Frodo has his brave and steady Sam by his side. It's Sam who knows not to trust Gollum, and it's Sam who bears the Ring temporarily when he believes Frodo is dead. He's even given his life to save them, and a Star Trek captain can't ask any more than that. (Photo: Paramount Pictures) Dr. WatsonLet's face it: Sherlock Holmes is kind of a jerk. But he becomes sympathetic by partnering him with the practical yet compassionate Dr. Watson, a pairing that has worked over the centuries, enough so that two iterations (one in which Watson is female) are currently enjoying success on TV. | Star Wars Rogue One: Everything We Know About The Characters Posted: 15 Jul 2016 11:40 AM PDT The cast and crew of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story recently took to the stage at this year's Star Wars Celebration, and plenty of new details were revealed (or confirmed) about the upcoming Star Wars spinoff film. We learnt about many of the characters, received official confirmation of a returning villain from the original Star Wars trilogy, and may have been treated to a huge spoiler. Read on to find out more! Jyn ErsoMuch was already known about the lead character of Rogue One. Jyn has been a loner for most of her life, and has been living on the streets since the age of 15. Her experience with crime and the underworld is apparently what entices the Rebellion to recruit her for the vital mission of stealing the plans for the Empire's new superweapon, the Death Star. Actress Felicity Jones says Erso is someone who comes into Rogue One as a fully-formed character due to her rough and complicated upbringing. Captain Cassian AndorPlayed by Diego Luna, Andor is an Alliance officer that is assigned to work with Jyn Erso during the operation to steal the original Death Star's plans. At Star Wars Celebration, Luna said the team initially comprises of just Erso and Andor, but eventually grows to include more characters. K-2SOK-2SO is an Imperial security droid that Andor captured and reprogrammed, and the two are now inseparable friends. Actor Alan Tudyk, who performs the role of K-2SO, said at Star Wars Celebration that his character can be brash and a little abrasive, speaking his mind at all times.
Bodhi RookRook is Rogue One's lead pilot, but from the details actor Riz Ahmed divulged at Star Wars Celebration, Rook was previously a pilot for the Galactic Empire, before he started to question his involvement with the gigantic evil organisation. Rook hails from the planet Jedha, which is currently under Imperial occupation. Rogue One director Gareth Evans describes Jedha as "the Mecca of Star Wars," a place where people travel to for "pilgrimages."
Chirrut Imwe (POSSIBLE SPOILERS WITHIN)SKIP THIS SLIDE IF YOU'RE WARY OF SPOILERS. Chirrut Imwe is a blind warrior, and a firm believer in the Force at a time when the Jedi are supposedly extinct. While he's not actually a Jedi, he is still a formidable warrior, and was described by actor Donnie Yen as being a "thinker." And--possibly a huge, unintended spoiler accidentally spilled by Jiang Wen (who plays Baze Malbus) during Star Wars Celebration--Imwe sounds like he's going to die during the events of Rogue One. Baze MalbusBaze Malbus, portrayed by Jiang Wen, is a firm friend of Chirrut Imwe. But while Imwe chooses the path of spirituality, Malbus is more direct, preferring big guns and direct action to achieve his goals. In fact, Wen's only comment about his character during Star Wars Celebration was that "he has a big gun."
Saw GerreraThe character of Saw Gerrera first appeared in the Star Wars universe in The Clone Wars animated series, and is a guerilla fighter who has long battled against the Galactic Empire. In Rogue One, Gerrera represents the more extreme end of the Rebellion, and seems to be willing to go further than anyone to achieve his goals.
Director Orson KrennicDuring Star Wars Celebration, Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn cheekily described Krennic as an "an Australian kind of villain." Outside of this jokey reference, it is known that Krennic leads a squad of Deathtroopers, and is an ambitious officer trying to move up the ranks of the Empire. Galen ErsoApart from his relationship with Jyn Erso (he's her father), very little is known about Galen Erso apart from the fact he's a prominent scientist within the Star Wars universe. Actor Mads Mikkelsen described Erso during Star Wars Celebration as a "person of interest," a scientist who had invented something so beautiful and fantastic "that it might change the universe." Darth VaderDarth Vader has been officially confirmed for Rogue One, though details of his exact involvement with the plot are obviously being kept secret. He will once again be voiced by James Earl Jones. |
