Posted: 23 Jan 2017 09:21 PM PST

March 17-19 will see 176 Call of Duty teams from around the world coming together to compete in the Call of Duty World League (CWL) Dallas Open, to be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

No Caption Provided

A USD$200,000 prize pool will be on the table for competing teams, as well as a chance to qualify for the first ever CWL Global Pro League LAN event at the MLG Arena in Columbus, Ohio, starting on April 20.

The CWL Dallas Open is run in partnership with Major League Gaming (MLG), who will be handling live streaming and broadcasts. 16 teams will compete in pool play, with a further 160 slots available, in what this press release claims to be one of the largest Call of Duty open brackets, ever. Teams that don't make it into the CWL Global Pro League during the CWL Dallas Open will have the chance to earn points by playing in online tournaments via GameBattles, or by attending other LAN events in other territories.

This is the first time teams from APAC will have a chance to compete in the CWL Dallas Open, alongside teams from North America and Europe.

Final Fantasy XV Director Discusses Upcoming Single-Player Updates and DLC

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 06:35 PM PST

Square Enix has announced its DLC plans for Final Fantasy XV, which include a series of single-player episodes focusing on Noctis' companions. The company has also announced it will be providing "gameplay enhancements" addressing chapter 13, specifically.

No Caption Provided

In a recent interview with US Gamer, Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata went into more detail about the changes coming to the game, and why fans should be excited, not concerned.

"The fans who have grown accustomed to playing traditional Final Fantasy games may feel uneasy about this unfamiliar initiative," he conceded. "That said, I personally believe the approach to updating single-player games, as we are doing with this title, will continue on in the future as a new trend." The company will be creating brand-new single-player content that allows players to not only learn more about Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto, but to control them as playable characters for the first time.

As well as the paid DLC, the game will also receive free updates which will enhance and improve it over time. Chapter 13 has been highlighted as an area that will receive significant change. Does this acknowledgment that chapter 13 requires improvement mean it was rushed? Or are these changes a response to unexpected player feedback to specific design decisions made by the team? "The direction of chapter 13's content was a deliberate decision made by the development team," Tabata said. "That said, the amount of stress inflicted on the player while running through this chapter was greater than we had anticipated. We believe resolving this issue will naturally lead to a better gameplay experience."

The interview concludes with Tabata opting not to choose a favorite child. "It is very difficult for me to select the 'best boy,'" he laughed. "It goes to show how much I insisted we create the four characters as a team from the start to the end. As a result, I think each character is charming and likeable in their own way. But because of this, I am also now unable to select the 'best boy.'"

Final Fantasy XV is currently celebrating the Moogle Chocobo Carnival in-game, as well as the fact that it was the second-best selling game in the US for 2016, having shipped over 6 million copies.

Mark Hamill Talks Episode 8's Title And How It Has A "Samurai" Feel

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 05:30 PM PST

Big news today for Star Wars, as Lucasfilm confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be officially called The Last Jedi. Now, Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, has come forward to say he likes the name and more.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Hamill was asked for his reaction to the title. He replied, "Well, it's got a real samurai...straightforward and minimalist. And I like that."

Hamill added that director Rian Johnson told him the name a long time ago and he was burdened with keeping the secret ever since. "I said, 'Don't tell me these things; I talk in my sleep!' They have us so jacked up with paranoia over leaks," Hamill said. "But that's the way of the world."

"It's funny because back when we were making the original, nobody cared," he added.

For more on The Last Jedi, check out GameSpot's new feature, "What Could Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Title Mean?"

There are no concrete details as to the plot for The Last Jedi as of yet, though we know the story was written by Johnson. Earlier this month, Johnson said he has known the title for The Last Jedi for years; it was in his original draft for the movie and he had to keep it a secret until now, apparently.

The Last Jedi opens immediately after The Force Awakens and a big part of the movie is apparently going to be the bond between these two major characters. Additionally, Kylo Ren actor Adam Driver has shared some insight into his character and how he's evolved for The Last Jedi.

Some of The Last Jedi's actors have said the movie will be "darker" than The Force Awakens, but it remains to be seen what that means. Regarding the movie's tone Johnson said in an interview, "I want it to be a blast and to be funny and to be a ride the way The Force Awakens and the original Star Wars movies were."

Following a delay, The Last Jedi arrives in theaters on December 15, 2017. It also stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. Carrie Fisher filmed her Leia scenes for the movie before she passed away in December.

What Could Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Title Mean?

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 05:03 PM PST

Disney and Lucasfilm have released the title of the next Star Wars film. Episode VIII will officially be called "The Last Jedi." It's known that the movie will begin immediately after the events of The Force Awakens, and it will be darker and bigger.

No Caption Provided

With this being the only piece of concrete information available, there is speculation as to what the title means and why red was used for the text.

We may not have the answers, but we definitely have some questions and ideas for what this could mean.

Who Is The Last Jedi?

No Caption Provided

In the opening crawl for The Force Awakens, Luke Skywalker is referred to as "the last Jedi." With the tiny role he had, perhaps the next movie will emphasize his journey and return. He's had plenty of time to contemplate any failures he feels he may be responsible for with Kylo Ren.

If Luke is the last one, what does that mean for Rey?

Is Jedi Singular or Plural?

No Caption Provided

Does the title suggest there will only be one single Jedi left? A common debate has been: Is Jedi singular or plural? In Attack of the Clones, Mace Windu mentions Jedi as plural. With this being the case, the title could mean we will see Luke, Rey, and anyone else that is Force-sensitive rise up to fight Kylo Ren, Supreme Leader Snoke, the First Order, evil renegade Ewoks, or any other threats to the galaxy. The title doesn't have to imply there will be only one Jedi left.

Unless...

What Does The Red Mean?

No Caption Provided

This isn't the first time red has been used for a Star Wars logo. Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith both used the color. What's different this time is, those two movies were the conclusion of their trilogies. That isn't the case with Episode VIII. Those movies did feature major deaths. Jedi saw the death of Darth Vader and Yoda. Sith saw the "death" of Anakin as well as Padme. Despite the major death is The Force Awakens, it's possible this could be the end of the road for Luke. These movies may be paving the way for the next generation of characters to take the center stage.

It's possible the Spanish title of the movie could answer whether or not the focus will be on one or more Jedi. We'll have to wait for more information or the first trailer to be released in order to get a better idea.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in theaters on December 15, 2017.

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 03:19 PM PST

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided's second story DLC pack launches next month, Square Enix and Eidos Montreal announced today.

The name for the DLC, A Criminal Past, had previously been shared, but we now know what to expect from it. It's a prequel story set "some time" before the start of Mankind Divided that tells the story of Adam Jensen's first mission with TF29.

No Caption Provided

"Jensen is transferred deep into a hostile, high-security prison for augmented felons," the official description reads. "His mission: track down and retrieve sensitive information from a fellow undercover agent who has gone dark. Success will help the fight against terror around the world, but Jensen will need to confront a darker side to his role before the day is done."

No trailer or screenshots from the expansion were shared other than the image above.

A Criminal Past launches for all platforms on February 23. Like the first story DLC, September's System Rift, it will be available on its own or as part of the $30 season pass. An individual price was not announced, but System Rift sells for $10.

Death Stranding: Guillermo Del Toro Is Not Creatively Involved

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 02:50 PM PST

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has clarified his role in Hideo Kojima's new game, Death Stranding. He told IGN that he is not creatively involved, though, as the Game Awards trailer revealed in December, he is a character in the game.

No Caption Provided

"Kojima-san called me and said, 'I want you to be a character in the game,' and I said, 'Gladly.' He's discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I'm not involved, creatively, at all," he explained.

"This is entirely Kojima-san's game," del Toro added. "I think it's gonna be a fantastic game, 100%. But this is him and his ideas. I'm just a puppet in his hands. My contribution is limited to being a cheerleader for his ideas and being scanned for long hours at a time. That's about it."

del Toro is not the only famous person in Death Stranding. The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus is the lead character, while Hannibal's Mads Mikkelsen is playing some kind of bad guy.

Kojima and del Toro said in the past they were interested in working together on something new, and Death Stranding was later revealed to be that game.

They were working together on Silent Hills before it was canceled, something del Toro still voices his discontent for. Silent Hills wasn't the first video game project involving del Toro that fell apart. The Pan's Labyrinth director was working on a horror game called Insane with publisher THQ, but it never materialized, in part due to the company's bankruptcy. After being burned twice, del Toro has said he doesn't intend to try to make a game of his own again.

"I have proven to be the albatross of video games," he said last year. "I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else's life, I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I'll join someone and his house will explode, or something."

Death Stranding is in development for PlayStation 4 and PC. For more, check out all of GameSpot's previous coverage of the game here.

Xbox One's New Guide And Home Screen Demoed In New Video

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 02:18 PM PST

Following an extremely brief glimpse of the Xbox One's new user interface we got last week, Microsoft has released a video better demonstrating what the system will look like following the release of a new update.

This video focuses primarily on the Guide and system's Home screen. In a blog post, Microsoft's Scott Henson acknowledged criticisms that the "that the UI can be complex and for certain tasks, can require too many button presses." He added, "Our goal is to simplify the UI and increase overall system performance, and that starts with updating Home based on what you care most about for the games you play."

Your current activity no longer dominates the Home screen. Instead, it's represented with a smaller icon and buttons to jump to related areas, such as its Game Hub. Provided you don't have a custom image already selected, a game-specific piece of art will be displayed in the background.

As revealed previously, this update also makes a single press of the Xbox button bring up the Guide, as opposed to the two it currently takes. While still located along the left side of the screen, the revamped Guide provides access to numerous things it didn't before. These include an easy way to record game clips of various lengths, links to jump to recent games and apps, the My Games and Apps area, the Store, and your pins. If you're listening to background music, controls for it will pop up in the main tab of the Guide. You'll also find the same options to check out Achievements, your friends list, messages, notifications, and settings, as well as new broadcasting options.

This update appears to do away with Snap mode, something that was previously rumored. That functionality hasn't been removed entirely, though, as you can enable a new Achievement overlay that lets you track your progress.

Other changes include improvements to Cortana (such as the ability to set reminders), a more informative interface when downloading system updates, support for Blu-ray player bitstream passthrough (currently in beta), and developer support for audio options like Dolby Atmos. New accessibility options are also being introduced; most notably, the co-pilot feature that allows two separate controllers to be simultaneously as one.

All of this is planned to launch as part of the Creators Update (which brings Game Mode to Windows 10 PCs) sometime this spring. Members of the Xbox Insiders program will see the Xbox One features much sooner, with some people receiving the update today. It will then be rolled out to additional Insider members in the weeks to come.

Nintendo Switch Getting Another Lego Game

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 01:46 PM PST

The Nintendo Switch game lineup continues to grow. TT Games head of design Arthur Parsons confirmed on Twitter that the sandbox game Lego Worlds is coming to Nintendo's hybrid console. This joins Lego City Undercover, which was already confirmed.

"Currently we have announced that we are planning to release Lego City and Lego Worlds on Switch," he said to a fan (via DualShockers). That makes it sound like Lego Worlds was already confirmed for Switch, though it's unclear if it was. Whatever the case, it's confirmed now, though apparently unofficially announced.

Release dates for Lego Worlds and Lego City Undercover on Switch have not yet been announced. We also don't know anything about Switch-specific figures yet, if there are any.

Lego Worlds launches on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on February 21. Lego City Undercover, which was once a Wii U exclusive, comes to Switch, PS4, and Xbox One this Spring.

In other Switch news, the platform's seventh launch title was confirmed today. The Switch launches on March 3, priced at $300.

Godzilla 2 Director Is Confirmed

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 12:40 PM PST

The director of the upcoming monster movie sequel Godzilla: King of Monsters has been confirmed. Krampus director Michael Dougherty will helm the 2019 release, as well as co-write the screenplay.

No Caption Provided

Dougherty had already been announced as co-writer and was rumoured to be under consideration as director back in October. At the time, it was reported that this job depended on Legendary's approval of his and co-writer Zach Shields' screenplay.

As Variety confirms, he has now signed on as director. Godzilla: King of Monsters is the sequel to Gareth Edwards' 2014 blockbuster Godzilla, and is set for release on March 22, 2019.

Dougherty previously directed the Christmas-themed horror movie Krampus, as well as the acclaimed Halloween anthology Trick R' Treat. As a writer, he worked on Bryan Singer's superhero movies X-Men 2 and Superman Returns.

In May, Edwards left the Godzilla sequel amicably, with Deadline reporting that he would instead focus on smaller projects. His Star Wars spinoff Rogue One was released in December.

Godzilla: King of Monsters will form part of Legendary's ongoing big monster universe. Kong: Skull Island is set for release this March, while the monster mashup Godzilla vs. Kong will follow in 2020. For the latest Skull Island trailers, click here.

PS4 Pro Deal Throws In Two Free Games

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 12:08 PM PST

There haven't been many deals on the PlayStation 4 Pro since its launch in November, but there's one worth a look available right now.

Newegg is currently offering the system with two free games through its eBay store. You can get the system (equipped with a 1 TB hard drive), Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided for $400, the regular cost of the console itself. Shipping is free.

No Caption Provided

Both games are among those that have received PS4 Pro updates to take advantage of the system's added horsepower. They each offer 4K support in addition to other enhancements.

Unlike the standard version of the PS4, which combes bundled with either Uncharted 4 or Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's Legacy edition, the PS4 Pro doesn't come bundled with any games. For an idea of what to expect from the system, check out our PS4 Pro review.
